For the past 15 years, senior Mayzi Jo Edelheiser’s home has been Danielsville, Pennsylvania, a small town just south of Blue Mountain from which she commutes to Moravian. “Growing up, I wished I lived in a more suburban area, but now, I can see that living in Danielsville strengthened my appreciation for wildlife and the sanctuary it provides. The more time I spend away from home, the more I realize how integral such quiet places are.

What is your major or academic interest?

When I transferred to Moravian, I knew I wanted to major in English and secondary education. I chose this academic path because it aligns with my core interests and allows me to express myself. I love to read, and I love to write, and teaching will provide me the perfect outlet to communicate and share these passions.

You received the James Beck Oratory Prize last year, correct? Please tell us about your oratory skills and how you use them.

Yes, last year, I had the privilege of receiving the James Beck Oratory Prize. This was a tremendous honor, as I use my oratory skills on campus when I give presentations and participate in class discussions. Off campus, I use these skills in my work as a librarian.

What activities are you involved in?

I’m the secretary of SPECTRUM and the vice president of the Gender Equity Club. I’m also a writing fellow and consultant at the Writing Center.

Tell us about one of the best experiences you’ve had at Moravian University?

Working as a writing fellow and writing consultant has been a wonderful experience. It’s so rewarding to work with other students and assist them during their writing processes. In a way, helping them develop their writing and communication skills has helped me develop my own.

What have you discovered about yourself since you’ve been at Moravian?

Since coming to Moravian, I’ve become much more resilient. I’ve realized that I’m capable of so much more than I originally thought, and I’m really grateful for that.

I love indoor rock climbing! I’ve been climbing for a little over a year now, and it’s become my favorite pastime. It’s challenging in that it pushes you beyond what you think you’re capable of but that makes it all the more rewarding.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

Reeves Library! I’m a commuter, so I practically live there.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not studying and why?

When I’m not studying, I’m either climbing or reading. (But if it were possible to do both at the same time, I would.)
