LANCASTER, PA, April 1, 2025 — Today, Lancaster Theological Seminary (LTS) has announced it will celebrate its 200th anniversary with a special event at its historic 555 W. James Street campus. The signature event will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Santee Chapel featuring recognition messages, music, guest speakers, and milestone highlights of the Seminary’s two centuries of theological education and community service.
Guest speakers include Dr. Emilie Townes (Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Religion & Black Studies at Boston University School of Theology) and Dr. Teresa Smallwood (Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs at United Lutheran Seminary).
This free program will be broadcast via livestream on the LTS website and a reception will follow the event.
Founded on March 12, 1825, in Gettysburg, LTS has played a vital role in preparing religious and community leaders committed to faith, justice, and service. The bicentennial celebration offers an opportunity to honor the Seminary’s legacy, strengthen connections among students, alumni, and faith communities, and position LTS for future growth.
“For two centuries, Lancaster Theological Seminary has been a beacon of faith, learning, and service,” says The Very Rev. Dr. Katherine Ragsdale, Interim VP of Moravian University and Dean of Lancaster and Moravian Seminaries.
“This bicentennial is not just a celebration of our past but a call to continue shaping the future of theological education and leadership. We invite alumni, religious leaders, and the broader community to join us in honoring this incredible legacy,” Ragsdale adds.
The Seminary, now part of Moravian University, has expanded its reach while maintaining its distinct identity and mission.
“Lancaster Theological Seminary’s 200-year history is a testament to its unwavering commitment to educating and inspiring faith leaders,” notes Bryon Grigsby, President of Moravian University.
“As part of Moravian University, LTS continues to grow and adapt, ensuring its impact will be felt for generations to come,” Grigsby concludes.
The bicentennial event will also serve as an opportunity to increase awareness and institutional support for the Seminary’s mission. Additionally, LTS is planning a special celebration later this year as it honors the 100th anniversary of the historic Santee Chapel on June 1, 2025. Watch for details to come.
