Love Letters to Moravian

Kahron Walker ’17 told his story of growing up in a rough part of New Jersey, finding his way to Moravian with the encouragement of his aunt; of the transformative power of his Moravian experience, and the alumni support that guided him to an opportunity at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, where he’s worked for more than six years as a financial planning and analytics analyst.

Brian Rashid stood on the receiving end of that story, capturing it on video for the project Love Letters to Moravian University—the latest work in his endeavor Love Letters to the World.

Rashid—storyteller, brand strategist, filmmaker, TED talker, and creative entrepreneur—happened upon the concept for Love Letters in Uruguay. He was visiting the country and planned to stay only a month when COVID hit, leaving him stranded for a year. Toward the end of his time in South America, Rashid crafted a Love Letter to Uruguay—a thoughtful message thanking the country for what he saw, learned, and came to love. 

The letter went viral, and Rashid received thousands of messages from around the globe. Seeing the power of his story to bring light and humanity to people all over the world, he recognized an opportunity to create Love Letters through a multimedia platform, inviting people to share their stories about places meaningful to them through short films and personal essays. Rashid has completed several films including Love Letters to New York City and Love Letters to Washington, DC.

Inspired by his work, Moravian invited Rashid to create Love Letters to Moravian University.

So far, Rashid has filmed the stories of the following members of the Moravian University community: Ana Bustamante ’18, ’23, Charlie Decker ’63, Gabriella Greenhoward ’20, Arly Hernandez ’26, Gwen Kester ’24 and her grandparents Gary and Marilyn Kester ’64, Catie Lovett ’25, Sabrina Moody ’24, Marquis Ratcliff ’26, Fred Rooney ’70, David Sommers ’82, S’87, Kahron Walker ’17, and Sonia Aziz, dean of the School of Business and Economics.

Love Letters to Moravian University will debut on March 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Foy Concert Hall. Rashid will show a short film—a narrated montage of pieces from all the individual Love Letters. This will be followed by a panel discussion with the featured students and alumni, and Sonia Aziz, dean of the school of business and economics.
