Director of Athletic Communications Mark Fleming has been recognized with the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Warren Berg Award.

The award is named for Warren Berg, a longtime sports information director (SID) at Luther College and the first SID from a college division school to serve as president of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 1963–64. The Berg award is presented annually to a college division member (NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA, two-year college, or Canadian institution) who has made outstanding contributions to the field of athletic communications and who, by his or her activities, has brought dignity and prestige to the profession.

Fleming’s achievement comes as no surprise to the Moravian University community. If you add all the previews, postgame releases, and award write-ups, Fleming composes 500 to 600 stories a year. On a busy Saturday, he says, he might write 8 to 10 stories, depending on how many teams are competing.

While at an event, Fleming records stats at the press table or in the press box, but sometimes he runs the streaming computer for live video broadcasts as he’s done for all 12 of the Landmark Conference basketball games held at the famed Palestra arena in Philadelphia over the past three years. “We try to stream every home game, 120 to 150 per year,” he says, “and we produce live stats for most of them as well.”

Serving in his 28th year at Moravian, Fleming has previously been recognized by the CSC with the 25 years of service award and the CSC President’s Award, and he was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame. In addition, he is a two-time Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest winner and recipient of the Lester Jordan Award, presented to an individual for exemplary service to the CSC Academic All-America Program and the promotion of the ideals of being a student-athlete.

Fleming has contributed significantly to the CSC on the national level. He has served as the communications director for the Division III Sports Information Directors Board since its inception in 2009, is an active member of the CSC Academic All-America Hall of Fame committee, and is a former member of the CSC Academic All-America Committee, which he joined in 1996. Fleming also served on the CSC Board of Directors from 2011 to 2014 and as the chair on the CSC’s College Division Management Advisory Committee from 2014 to 2017.

“On behalf of the Moravian University Athletic Department, it is my privilege to congratulate Mark on this tremendous achievement,” says Mary Beth Spirk, director of athletics and recreation. “His passion and dedication in not only promoting our student athletes but also striving to enhance our department in general has been unwavering over his stellar career. The Warren Berg award truly describes Mark. He works with dignity and continuously brings prestige to Moravian. I have personally been blessed to work with him over these past 28 years, and he works just as hard today as he did when he came to Moravian. Congratulations, Mark.”

Fleming will be presented with the Warren Berg Award at the 2025 CSC Unite Convention this coming June in Orlando, Florida.
